like lotus leaves

A Landscape All Her Own, James Rich, acrylic on canvas

like lotus leaves

where is the dreamtime, i mean
what space
where is the marker
to let us know if we know
recognize
were, are, or will be

where are the parts
we don't remember

the silver cord, now snapped back
releases these dreamscapes
floating
like lotus leaves
on green water

Optical Design

Like this technique. I've played around with line designs and some were quite beautiful, but I've so far kept them black and white. This color technique gives a lot more to play with. While the image shown at this link: Art 1. Optical Design - StumbleUpon is a design, I can just picture this simple use of color, shading and lines used in alien type illustrations :)

More Witchipoo

(See post below for Michele Witchipoo's version of The Three of Swords.) In the past, I've posted links to Michele Witchipoo's art on my blog Women of Esoterica. I copied and pasted from those posts, here they are:

Just sharing a link to a blog I like: Michele Witchipoo, cartoonist, artist, blogger and would be misanthrope. I can relate.

Psycho Bunny Deals With The Heat Artist Michele Witchipoo's blog: here's her latest Psycho Bunny (love it):Psycho Bunny Makes More Than A Poker Face at WitchesBrewPress's Blog

Michele Witchipoo, artist and blogger, has done a nice thing. She's put up her artwork (shown on left) on Cafe Press. Proceeds go to benefit the victims (which is all living things, all of us) of the spill.

Related items: it seems mermaid imagery is becoming an iconic symbol in this surreal madness caused by BP, one that denotes the real-yet-unreal-is this-really-happening-hopeless-helpless situation.

Hot Dog in Space

Many years ago I was playing around with lino prints. I did this one that I call "Hot Dog in Space."

Max Ernst Inspired Paintings - James Rich

Related to the post below about Christopher Knowles and Mike Clelland's bloggings about the surrealist painter Max Ernst, I thought I'd share a few of Jim's paintings. Ernst, as I commented in the previous post has been an inspiration for him. Jim often paints in a surrealist style, he's also played around with collages and paint as a medium. Many of his surreal and abstract paintings have a "galactic" theme -- referencing space, nature...

This painting reminds me of an Ernst influence, which Jim freely acknowledges. This is an acrylic on canvas board. Neither one of us remembers the title -- the original is packed away in the dark regions of the studio outside -- but we both think the title had Atlantis in it. If it didn't, it should have! So for now it's titled "Ruins of Atlantis."

hidden experience: Max Ernst, ritual magic and UFOs

Mike Clelland has a great post, inspired by the equally great OP from Christopher Knowles at The Secret Sun, concerning the surreal painter Max Ernst. Were images in the paintings shown on both blogs referring to a UFO abduction event? And even if they were not, not directly anyway, there is still a connection, as Christopher Knowles suggests. See Mike's post at hidden experience: Max Ernst, ritual magic and UFOs and Christopher Knowles post that Mike references here.

Painting by Max Ernst

Knowles writes:
It took some time to sort out but I later found that UFOs minus the ETH (namely, the Elusive Companion Hypothesis) worked quite well when I plugged them into all of the obsessions I plunged myself after dealing with those impasses; Synchronicity, High Weirdness, deep symbology, and so on.

In fact, the ECH was the missing puzzle piece that kept eluding me when dealing with those topics.

I also soon discovered that the ECH was lurking in the shadows of nearly every single obsession-- and often every mystery or conundrum-- in my life without me ever realizing it. I discover fresh examples of this all of the time and share them with you here.
Beautiful, isn't it?
Painting by Max Ernst
(The image of the specific style of circle appears in other paintings. There's something very "all knowing" about that image. Something prescient, reminding me a little of my orange orb encounter. Ernst's circle is not orange, nor is it a orb or closed sphere, but still, there's something that tugs at me in my own personal image bank. In Ernst's circle I find it interesting that the circle seems to beckon, as well as watch. There's an opening within the circle, which evokes, for myself, areas that are hidden yet ... to be found.)

I left a comment at Mike Clellands hidden experience that Ernst is a favorite artist of my husband Jim, who is a painter, often painting in surreal styles. When I shared these posts with Jim, and told him about the book Knowles mentions on his blog; Max Ernst and Alchemy: A Magician in Search of Myth By M. E. Warlick and told him that Ernst "was a magician" he said he "wasn't surprised -- I've always felt that, and always related to his spirituality." (Then a lively conversation ensued about collage, art, spirituality, war, ...okay, I'm back...)

Mike at hidden experience calls Christopher's post about Ernst "groundbreaking" and I agree.

Need An Artist Statement?

Of course you do! Here's mine:

Artist Statement
My work explores the relationship between acquired synesthesia and copycat violence.
With influences as diverse as Rousseau and John Lennon, new tensions are crafted from both explicit and implicit discourse.
Ever since I was a student I have been fascinated by the endless oscillation of relationships. What starts out as undefined soon becomes corroded into a manifesto of defeat, leaving only a sense of nihilism and the chance of a new synthesis.
As wavering replicas become clarified through studious and personal practice, the viewer is left with a new agenda of the corners of our condition.

Happy Halloween! Bride of Frankenstein

Classic film, with Elsa Lanchester as Frankenstein's monster's bride. The film: 1935, directed by James Whale, who also directed, among other films, The Invisible Man and Frankenstein.

I don't know if the studio or Whale intentionally photographed Lanchester as a Silver Screen Siren -- typical studio pose of the day -- but I'm sure they did:

Halloween Season

Halloween is only one day, but for me, it's a season -- the whole month of October. Actually, as I posted on UFO Mary about my Day of the Dead inspired altar, the season -- "witchy," Fall, Halloween, magick, senses, flames and lights, -- begins around the early September and ends in early November.

I love vintage Halloween images, and decided this year to try and post an image a day (though probably won't achieve that) on some of my blogs, with a theme. On UFO Mary: devil themes, on Mothman Flutterings, bats, etc. So here at Alien Art Genre I thought I'd post monsters and other images that won't fit elsewhere.

The image posted here isn't vintage, and it isn't a monster. But it has a Halloween vibe to it. I love this painting; it's by my husband, James (Jim) Rich, painted about ten years ago I think. It's titled Bruja. Right now it's in the studio but I want it in our bedroom... maybe I can convince him to put it up soon. Happy Days of Halloween everyone!

Moon and Concrete

I have a recurring memory-image from childhood: white concrete, the moon, the deep deep blue of night sky, Mt. Hood, feeling the cold of the rear window glass in my grandmother's car at night. They're all related, all connected, but I don't know in what way. Within all that are the memories of my "friends," the small beings that came in the night to float me through doors and walls and out the front of the house and up into the large fir tree in our neighbor's front yard. There, in that tree, I'd wait for "them" to come.

I did go to Mt. Hood when I was very little; younger than the age I was in this memory. And at that young age, we did not live in the house where these memories take place; that came about three years later. Furthermore, the concrete (front yard torn up and replaced with white concrete)  -- that too came later, after we'd lived in the second house for some years. So the memories are all true, but mixed up...

I said I'd been to Mt. Hood when I was very young, that I know because I was told so, but only remember seeing it as were drove away. And it was late at night. Why my grandmother would be driving just the two of us (for it was only herself and I that went up to Oregon at that time) in the Mt. Hood area late at night doesn't make sense... but I have a clear memory of the glass all around, the night sky, the moon, and the looming silent white of Mt. Hood's giant peak.

These memories have been nagging at me, as well as the images, and I was impelled to write this poem, without thinking of anything, just letting it come. The ending surprised me a bit.

Moon and Concrete
a stream of consciousness regression. . .

hard white
harsh, bone
rough
glittering, shimmers
stark light
chalk like
silence
pool of stone, reflecting a heavy Prussian-blue sky -- invisible

round white soft with gray
following
through windows
bouncing off cold cold snow mountains
at night

pretending sleep in my wool coat
gliding silently through cold snow white blue night light

moon and concrete,waiting, breathing
watching...

Patrick Valenza's Deviant Moon Tarot

Deviant Moon Tarot, Patrick Valenza, artist

I love this deck! Feeling the need to acquire a new deck, I went searching on-line for one I liked. A few spoke to me to varying degrees, but Patrick Valenza's The Deviant Moon Tarot is one I just love. Here's a brief description of the deck from the Aeclectic Tarot site:
It's [Deviant Moon Tarot] inspired by (and incorporates) images of cemetaries and mental asylums, and designed to illuminate deeper parts of the subsconscious. The talented illustrator [Patrick Valenza] is also a tarot student, and the deck is the result of three years of artistic work.
It's a bit odd choosing a deck without being able to handle it first, but I'm going with my intuition on this one. I read a few reviews on Amazon; one related how they appreciate the art very much but it's "too dark" for their personal taste. I can see that, though for me, it doesn't seem that way. Choosing a Tarot or Oracle deck is so very personal. For example, I like the idea of the Mermaid deck, (Tarot of Mermaids) loving mermaids, but found the actual deck rather creepy. As much as I wanted to buy into that deck, I just couldn't. I found it too gloomy and negative for my use.

Old Poems and Images

I've been going through some of my poetry and creative writing with the idea of e-zines, or chapbooks, or something, not sure yet where I'm going with this. I noticed that some of theses early poems from the 1980s have recurring images of orbs, night skies, and feelings of disconnection. In re-reading them, I realized many of these were written around the time I saw the orange orb. In fact, this poem refers to an orb, although it's a sliver orb, not orange. The imagery is interesting: moon women, orbs, shadows, and the end, sweet jesus, "capturing my frozen eyes." ?! What was that about? I also noticed that I wrote a lot of these kinds of poems during the late summer and the fall, which is the time frame for our orb sighting. And in going back further, reading poems I wrote while living in L.A., the imagery of orbs and night and planets, etc. were present. As Jim and I know now, we had UFO related, and/or high strangeness events occur when we were living in L.A., before the orange orb sighting. And, of course, going back to our childhoods, independent of each other. Are there clues in these poems, signals from the subconscious? No doubt, lol.

unconnected with moon women

a silver orb waits silently in a

musty corner on a wooden shelf,
hidden by sharp shadows like Chinese meat cleavers poised
on thick pegs above labeled spice jars, corked and racked,
full of the herbs of mid-wives, now forgotten.

on the windowsill, tart purple grapes, hot and shriveled

grapefruit and pomegranate exposing their soft pink and secret glistening red waiting to be eaten.

unconnected with moon women i wait,

a single artichoke on a a scalloped plate, my tips half chewed, strewn about the cream white edges

the sliver orb shifts forward slightly in the night, and
one sliver gleams bone white
capturing my frozen eyes.

David Huggins and Crescent: Artistic Synchronicities

Untitled, Regan Lee, oil pastel on paper

UFO researcher Farah Yurdozu was the guest on Coast to Coast last night. Much of the interview concerned her book Love In An Alien Purgatory:
The Life And Fantastic Art of David Huggins
;
the story of abductee/contactee and artist David Huggins. One of the gray like beings he had many interactions he called Crescent; an interesting name, I thought.

Huggins described some of the beings, including Crescent, as white, typical gray-like aliens,  but wearing a dark wig. That description startled me. It reminded me of my Geisha Alien dream, where I am sitting in a domed space ship in space, sitting across a large, thin, white alien/woman, wearing a black "geisha style" wig. My friend Lola had an experience with a tall, white woman entity wearing a dark wig -- I wrote about that for my Trickster's Realm column on BoA. (Lola and I have a strong pyschic connection; we've experienced some tineresting things togehter including both of us being aware of "them" -- an alien intelligence/presence -- appearing, though invisibily, in my living room.)

A few weeks ago, she [Lola] called me to tell me she felt a presence in her bedroom. ... There have been times when, even over a long distance, one of us can sense what's going on. In other words, get a psychic confirmation of something. This experience Lola had was bothering her, and she asked me if I had felt anything. I truthfully told her I didn't see anything either way.
Then there was the time Lola was talking on the phone to a friend, and looked up to see a very, very tall entity just looking at her. Just watching her. Lola had the distinct impression this thing wasn't human -- or ever was, as in, it was once a human, now a ghost -- but was trying to pass itself off as a human. She said it reminded her, in a typically goofy Fortean way, of the characters in the children's series Arthur. Long, long face, her eyes were up high, and her hair was fake looking, like someone pretending they had real hair. She said the eyes were very round, and very dark. I asked Lola about the shape of the eyes; she said that, while large, they were round, but it was the very deep darkness that was so strange. (Random Bits of Weirdness on the Oregon Coast on BoA)

Untitled, Regan Lee, acrylic on canvas

Lola's experience parallels in some ways Huggins descriptions, as well as my Geisha-Alien dream, and the imagery in my drawings.

Another startling thing: when Huggins said he called the being Crescent, I was reminded of an image I keep drawing and painting over and over. The faces in these paintings and drawings are somewhat inverted triangle like, or thinly oval, often white, pale, often featureless, or with very slight, brief features, and, holding a crescent shape. The two images here were ones I could find easily; the others are packed away. One oil pastel drawing I did  of a white faced woman holding a moon boat, or crescent shaped -- whatever, I don't know what it is, I just draw the shape -- I gave to a friend years ago. I have several of these images that I've either drawn or painted somewhere around here...

The drawing shown here I did about twenty years ago, and the painting is in the beginning stages and one I started about a year ago but haven't gotten around to completing.

Huggins is an artist, and an excellent one, from the images I've seen on-line. He said during the interview that he thinks there's an important connection between artists (singers, musicians, writers, painters, etc.) and this whole alien/UFO/abduction/contactee experience. He made it a point to say that he thinks it's an overlooked area of UFO/abduction research. I think there's something to that. . .

A fantastic interview and I'll be ordering Farah's book today.
